On March 21, around 20 agricultural experts from Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and China sat together to discuss how to give better play to the outcomes of their cooperative research on autumn soybeans. At the same time, specialists from Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and other countries also received trainings on promoting new upland rice varieties and cultivation technologies at the Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

Cross-border agricultural cooperation in the Lancang-Mekong region has a long history. Yunnan enjoys a technological edge in agricultural production, especially the R&D in the varieties of rice, corn and other major crops, as well as high-yield and energy-saving cultivation, farmland water conservancy and energy technologies in rural areas, making its cooperation with neighboring countries highly complementary. Since the 1990s, various cooperation mechanisms have been established. Starting in 2008, the Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences has taken the lead in setting up cross-border cooperation platforms, including GMS Exchanges and Cooperation in Agricultural Science and Technology. Related exchanges and cooperation in multiple projects have also been carried out.

Statistics show that in recent years, the Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, via the GMS Agricultural Science and Technology Exchanges and Cooperation platform, has exchanged more than 260 crop varieties among its six member countries, and trained some ten thousand technical personnel and farmers. The cultivation area of Yunnan’s quality rice varieties, such as Yunguang 14 and Yunguang 17, has exceeded 66,700 hectares in Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, Pakistan, and so forth.

Analysts said that the establishment of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) mechanism has injected new impetus to subregional agricultural cooperation. Xiao Yi, Director of the Foreign Exchange and Cooperation Division, Yunnan Provincial Agriculture Department, said that Yunnan is trying to promote agricultural development, rural economy and sustainable win-win cooperation in the subregion through agricultural cooperation.
