Aside from the Han people, there are 25 minority ethnic groups with a population of over 6,000, including 15 Yunnan-exclusive ones of Hani, Bai, Dai, Lisu, Lahu, Va, Naxi, Jingpo, Blang, Pumi, Achang, Nu, Jinuo, De’ang and Derung. Over 1/3 of the population of Yunnan are ethnic minorities.

Costumes of Yunnan ethnic groups

A vivid kaleidoscope of ethnic cultures and arts make Yunnan a prior destination for fans of fine arts and a directors’ choice for making films and TV series. Shows like the Beautiful Golden Sand River, Lijiang Impression-Snow Mountain Chapter, Butterfly Dream, and Naxi Ancient Music have played significant roles in promoting culture and tourism in Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-la. In recent years, outstanding indigenous songs and dances of Yunnan staged by Yang Liping, have drawn broad attention throughout China.

Yunnan Nationalities Village

Yunnan abounds in cultural heritages. Following the Old Town of Lijiang and the Terraced Petty Fields of Hani Minority in Honghe Prefecture, the ancient tea garden in Jingmai of Pu’er is also standing as a world heritage candidate. Owing to its diversity of ethnic groups and their folk literatures, festivals, celebrations, traditional handicrafts, Yunnan boasts huge untapped potential in folk cultures, as well as intangible cultural heritages.

Typical Yunnan dishes

Cultural elements are usually fused into catering in Yunnan. Rich in natural resources and produce, Yunnan has dishes that are blessed with a wide array of raw materials and ingredients. Recent years have witnessed the rise of many catering brands featuring healthy and organic food and ethnic cultural elements in the province, where diners can enjoy not only palatable food but also shows of ethnic music and dance that draw together food and culture.
