Easy connectivity

In a broader sense, Yunnan is located in the juncture of China, Southeast Asia and South Asia, and it serves as China's gateway to South and Southeast Asian countries. As early as 2,000 years ago, the Southern Silk Road, which meandered from Sichuan to Yunnan and further extended to Myanmar, India and the western world, was already important pathway for ancient China’s outbound transport, trade and cultural exchanges. In modern times, the famed Stiwell Road and the Hump air route also crossed the territory of Yunnan.

In recent years, highway, railway, aviation and navigation connectivity of Yunnan have been further improved. Three international passageways leading to the ASEAN and South Asia are beginning to take shape. The west route, the Yunnan-Myanmar Road, Sino-India Road and Kunming-Dali Railway provide access to Myikyina, Bhamo, Lashio and even Yangon in Myanmar. Besides, Ledo in India can be accessed via Myikyina, whereas the Indian railway network might be linked for further destinations like Dhaka and Chittagong in Bangladesh and Kolkata in India.

The central route leading to Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore is represented by the navigation route of the Lancang-Mekong River, Kunming-Bangkok Highway and Xishuangbanna Airport. As for the eastern route, the existing Yunnan-Vietnam Railway, Kunming-Hekou Highway and the navigation route of the Red River, which is in urgent need of exploration, will be utilized to connect with Hanoi, Haiphong and southern areas of Vietnam.

Thanks to easy connectivity, Yunnan also saw fast economic growth in recent years. In 2017, Yunnan GDP amounted to RMB 1.62826 trillion (around US$ 259.223 billion), a year-on-year increase of 9.5%. Fiscal revenue of the province reached RMB 339.208 billion, up by 5.8%. Urbanization ratio of the province reached 44.33% by the end of 2016, 1.0 percent higher than that of the previous year. In 2017, the foreign trade volume of Yunnan reached US$ 23.39 billion, of which the export stood at US$ 11.43 billion and the import at US$ 11.96 billion.
