Laos and Vietnam have successfully cooperated in communications, especially human resources and ICT sector development, and will continue to do so, according to a leading official.

The successful cooperation has highlighted at a press conference in Vientiane on Tuesday by Minister of Post and Telecommunications Dr Thansamay Kommasith to help mark Laos-Vietnam Solidarity and Friendship Year 2017, as well as celebrate the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Laos-Vietnam Friendship and Cooperation Treaty (July 18, 1977-July 18, 2017) and the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations (September 5, 1962- September 5, 2017).

Dr Thansamay announced the Lao's Ministry of Post and Telecommunications has been cooperating with Ministry of Information and Communications of Vietnam over a long period to develop the sector as well as to promote information and communications technology (ICT) innovations.

The development of postal services, telecommunications and ICT are key elements for the promotion of trade and technology exchanges as well as for the economic, social and cultural development of the two Parties. The two countries have been cooperating on training in spectrum management and monitoring, along with the management of postal services, internet broadband, cloud computing, and social media.

The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications has been working in collaboration with Vietnam to manage internet domains, especially dotla (.LA) websites, and the nation's cyber protection.

For human resource development, Vietnam has provided scholarships for ICT undergraduate and master degree courses for Lao officials to study in Vietnam as well as exchanges of officials and experts on working visits.

The Ministry of Information and Communications of Vietnam will provide 15 ICT master degree scholarships along with ICT training courses for Lao officials to study in Vietnam.

The two sides will also cooperate to exchange information, experiences and best practices on e-government development, ICT application development, e-Service promotion and business opportunities as well as cooperation between ICT providers, the government and enterprises.

Laos and Vietnam will continue to support and encourage the two nations' enterprises to conduct ICT related cooperation activities in both jurisdictions respectively.

They will continue close cooperation and mutual support in the framework of relevant regional and international organisations related to the postal and ICT sectors.

Laos and Vietnam shall undertake cooperation including regular exchanges on the development status and future plans in the ICT sector. There will also be exchanges of officials and experts on working visits, and joint participation in exhibitions, training courses, workshops, and seminars.
