World Heritage Vat Phou lights up for Visit Laos Year

Champassak province is getting ready to welcome domestic and foreign visitors from around the country, region and world to its annual Vat Phou festival on January 29-31 amid celebrations for Visit Laos Year 2018, an official confirmed on Friday.

The Vat Phou festival will have activities including a parade with Lao dancing representing the province’s ten districts, provincial Information, Culture and Tourism Department senior official, Mrs Mala Chanthalam told Vientiane Times.

“This parade is not held every year, but is held when the province has a grand celebration,” Mrs Mala said.

Visitors can also enjoy sports games, theatrical shows and a Lao concert while the final evening will see a candlelight procession in which visitors can join, she said.

Local goods and souvenirs will be on sale at market fairs and booths during the annual festivities to celebrate the famed UNESCO World Heritage Listed site.

Located in the nation’s south, Champassak province boasts activities include a Lao food festival, One District One Product (ODOP) fairs and exhibitions of goods such as Lao silk and cotton, beauty pageants and local sports contests as well as the annual boat racing and rocket festivals, Ms Mala explained.

Natural wonders include Khonphapheng, Tad Fan, and Tad Yeuang waterfalls, and activities from adventurous trekking and ziplining to relaxing rest and recuperation amid nature. The province has a popular homestay programme including on the Mekong River’s Donkho Island, with many households modifying their homes to accommodate visitors and create income.

Visitors can eat delicious food such as fresh fish and organically grown vegetables that are free of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. They can also enjoy produce from the Bolaven Plateau including a drop from its famed coffee crop. To achieve international level quality benchmarks consistently, the department has been working with hotels and guesthouses to raise standards and ranking them with between one to five stars.

In the first nine months of this year, Champassak province attracted domestic and international visitors numbering more than 500,000, according to a provincial official. Last year, the province attracted more than 600,000 visitors, Visitors to Champassak province via the capital can travel by road or plane, with flights from Vientiane to Pakxe scheduled twice per day, she said.
