A college focused on developing a talent pool and research center for the purple pottery industry opened at Honghe University in south Yunnan province on June 30.

Managed by the government, university and enterprises, the college will support, serve and guide the upgrading and transformation of Yunnan’s purple pottery industry and spread the pottery culture around the world.

Originating from Jianshui county in Yunnan, purple pottery has had a long history spanning over nine centuries. It was listed among the second group of national intangible cultural heritages in 2008 and as one of the top four pottery varieties in China in 1953.

As the only  higher institution in Honghe Hani and Yi autonomous prefecture, Honghe University has achieved numerous awards at international and national pottery competitions since it started the purple pottery subject in 2013.

The university plays an important role in passing down and innovating purple pottery skills, the rejuvenation of Honghe special culture and the upgrading and transformation of high schools.

It is expected that the new college’s purple pottery program will enroll 90 students this year.
