The hulusi or cucurbit flute is a music instrument from mysterious Yunnan. The sound of nature it makes is soft, bright and melodious, taking you from the hustle and bustle of life to tranquility.

The instrument was invented by ethnic groups in Yunnan. Its origin is in Lianghe County, Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture and it is  polular among the Dai, Achang, Wa, De'ang and Bulang peoples in Yunnan.

A hulusi is composed of a cucurbit, a main pipe, reed and several attached pipes. There are seven holes on the main pipe.

Also, some legends are related to the origin of hulusi. One of the well-known is about a love story. It is said that once upon a time, flood swept the area along the Mengyang River in Lianghe County. A brave-hearted young man from the Dai ethnic group took a large cucurbit with him, swam through the raging waves and rescued his beloved from the flood.

Seeing his bravery, the god created a hulusi with the large cucurbit and give it to the young man who then played the instrument, bringing peace to the river valley. Since then, playing hulusi has been passed down among the Dai people and spread to other ethnic groups.
