Today marks Chong-yang Festival. Also known as Double Ninth Festival, the Chong-yang Festival is a traditional Chinese festival which falls on the 9th day of the 9th month of the lunar calendar.

It is also a time to show filial piety to the aged according to Chinese custom. On this day, it is customary to climb a mountain, drink chrysanthemum wine and eat rice cakes.

On the coast or in the hills, seniors can enjoy time with nature as younger people take them for a visit or buy them gifts. The Chong-yang Festival began as a day to drive away danger.

Here is a Chinese poem related to the festival:

Thinking of My Brothers In Shandong
   -- By Wang Wei

All alone in a foreign land.
I am twice as homesick on this day.
When brothers carry dogwood up the mountain,
Each of them a branch, and my branch missing.
