Laos, Yunnan universities to cooperate in education

The National University of Laos (NUoL) has signed an agreement with Kunming University of China for development of education and exchanges to upgrade the skills of lecturers and students.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed at the NUoL in Vientiane on Monday morning by the Vice President of the National University of Laos, Assoc Prof. Dr Phouth Simmalavong, and the Vice President of Kunming University, Prof. Wang Yingping.

The event was attended by the President of the National University of Laos, Prof. Dr Somsy Gnophanxay, and officials of the two sides.

Since 2012, the NUoL and Kunming University of China have been cooperating in technical exchanges. The Chinese varsity has also provided assistance to the NUoL.

The two sides have now agreed to continue their cooperation for five years.
This will include exchange of faculty, staff members, research scholars and students, joint research activities, participation in seminars and academic meetings, and exchange of academic materials and other information.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Somsy said, “Since the NUoL began cooperating with the Kunming University of China in 2012, we have sent 121 students, including 51 women, to study at Kunming University.

“In the academic year 2017-2018, the NUoL has sent 83 students to study for bachelors degrees, 17 for masters and three for doctorate degrees.

Meanwhile, 324 Chinese students also came to study at NUoL during 2017-2018.”

Kunming University has also provided sporting equipment worth over 101 million kip to the Lao varsity.
