[LMC] Major events on Lancang-Mekong Cooperation in chronological order

The 3rd Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Foreign Ministers' Meeting will be held from Dec. 14 to Dec. 16 in Dali, southwestern China's Yunnan province. Lao Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith, Union Minister for International Cooperation of Myanmar U Kyaw Tin, Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai and Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh will also attend the meeting.

The following are the major events regarding the LMC in the past years: 

In November, 2014, Premier Li Keqiang proposed in the 17th China-ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting to establish the Lancang-Mekong River cooperation mechanism which got positive response from countries along the Mekong River, and planted a plump seed for the Lancang-Mekong River cooperation.

Since the beginning of 2015, multiple consultations, including work group meeting, senior diplomatic officials’ meeting and foreign ministers’ meeting, have been held in many places, from Beijing to Chiang Mai, Thailand; from Jinghong in Yunnan Province to Sanya in Hainan Province.

On April 6, 2015, the first Senior Diplomatic Officials' Meeting of Lancang-Mekong River Dialogue and Cooperation was held at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing. The Meeting was co-chaired by Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin and Deputy Permanent Secretary Noppadon Theppitak of the Foreign Ministry of Thailand. Senior officials from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Viet Nam attended the Meeting. 

On August 21, 2015, the 2nd Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Senior Officials' Meeting was held in Chiang Rai of Thailand. Senior officials and representatives of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Viet Nam were present at the meeting. The meeting discussed the concept paper of the establishment of the Mekong-Lancang cooperation, "early harvest" projects, the arrangement for the 1st Foreign Ministers' Meeting and other topics.

On February 23-24, 2016, the 3rd Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Senior Officials' Meeting was held in Sanya, south China's Hainan Province. Senior officials and representatives of Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar and Viet Nam were present at the meeting. 

In November 2015, the first foreign ministers' meeting on Lancang-Mekong River cooperation was held in Jinghong, Yunnan Province, which is a river away from Laos and Myanmar. Foreign Minister Wang Yi and other five Foreign Ministers from countries along the Mekong River attended the meeting.

On March 22-23, 2016, the first leaders' meeting of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation mechanism (LMC) was held in Sanya, south China's Hainan Province. On November 15, 2016, the First Lancang-Mekong Sub-regional Commodity Exposition opened in southwest China's Yunnan Province. Officials, business representatives, experts and scholars from China, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Myanmar are attending the expo.

On December 23, 2016, the 2nd Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting was held in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Senior Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhon of Cambodia, Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai of Thailand, Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith of Laos, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs U Kyaw Tin of Myanmar, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh of Vietnam attended the meeting. 

March 10, 2017, the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) China Secretariat was launched in Beijing, capital of China. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi (L, front) and Cambodian ambassador to China Khek Caimealy Sysoda (R, front) attend the launching.

On September 29, 2017, the 6th Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Diplomatic Joint Working Group Meeting was held in Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province of China. Officials and representatives of China, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Viet Nam discussed on the the 3rd Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Foreign Ministers' Meeting.

On October 28, 2017, the 5th Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Senior Officials' Meeting was held in Kunming, Yunnan Province of China. Senior officials and representatives of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Viet Nam exchanged ideas on the future development of the cooperation.

On November 24, 2017, the Second Lancang-Mekong Subregional National Commodities Exposition, also Dianchi Forum for Lancang-Mekong Cooperation, opened at Kunming Dianchi International Convention and Exhibition Center, Yunnan Province, with the Lancang-Mekong Alliance of Vocational Education officially formed on the same day.
