Take a bite of Dai food in Yuanjiang

Yuanjiang, under the jurisdiction of Yuxi City, is a Hani, Yi and Dai autonomous county where different ethnic groups have different culinary cultures. 

Today we introduce you the Dai food of Yuanjiang.

Different from Dai people in west Yunnan’s Dehong and south Yunnan’s Xishuangbanna, those in Yuanjiang has developed a different cooking culture though they also eat sour, hot and spicy. In the Dai food of Dehong and Xishuangbanna, the sour of taste comes from lemons, while the Dai people in Yuanjiang get the taste from tamarind. 

When treating guests, Yuanjiang Dai people would cook a whole goose which is often the signature dish of the banquet. Other specialties include deep fried pig skin, dragon fruit fried with sliced potato, meat balls, and sliced papaya in sauce.

The staple food would be rice. But if you are lucky, you can eat sticky rice cakes wrapped in banana leaves. There are two kinds of cakes. On is sweet, the other is salty. You can draw your lots and choose between them. It is said that only the local people can tell which is sweet and which is salty because the cakes are wrapped in banana leaves and are almost in the same shape.
