Chinese medical team began launching a free cataract surgery for 200 patients in Myanmar's Yangon Thursday under a brightness journey program.

Under the program, the medical team from the first Affiliated Hospital of China's Kunming Medical University will conduct the treatment at Sitagu Shwe Pyi Hein Eye Hospital until next Tuesday.

Undertaken by the Kunming Medical University, the program is jointly sponsored by China's Yunnan Provincial People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Myanmar's Visakha Foundation and Sitagu Shwe Pyi Hein Eye Hospital.

Myanmar has been launching nationwide cataract surgery treatment in cooperation with international organizations as the country has a large number of cataract patients and more brightness activities are in demand in the country, S. Kyaw Hla, chairman of Myanmar Medical Council said.

The Yunnan Provincial People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries donated 45 million kyats (29,032 U.S. dollars) worth medical equipment and 8 million kyats (5,161 U.S. dollars) in cash assistance to the Sitagu Shwe Pyi Hein Hospital.

Under the Brightness Journey program, over 2,200 Myanmar cataract patients have received free surgery so far since 2013.
