According to the latest data, there are 104 wild elephants settling in southwest Yunnan’s Pu'er City where the forest coverage rate reaches 68.8%. Their spontaneous gathering is a signal that the ecological environment improves in the city.

Elephants are “big stomach kings”. An adult elephant eats about 300 kilograms of food a day, including leaves and fruits. Therefore, a herd of elephants need a large living area. With the coming of more wild elephants, the Pu'er government has taken measures to create better living environment for them and encourage local people to co-exist harmoniously with them.

These measures include strengthening early warnings, improving compensation system and setting up "special canteens", where banana trees, corn and sugar canes are planted for wild elephants.
