Myanmar brocade gets popular at Munao Zongge Festival
During the Fourth Jingpo Brocade Competition held in March 3 in west Yunnan’s Dehong, Myanmar brocades got popular among Chinese customers for their unique colors and patterns.
Wearing festive costumes, the Jingpo women were weaving the colorful threads into beautiful patterns. On the morning of March 3, “Looking for the most beautiful Jingpo brocade—the Frouth Jingpo Brocade Competition” was held during the Munao Zongge Festival in west Yunnan’s Delong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture. Ten teams participated in the event, including two from Myanmar’s Myitkyina and Yangon.
The Myanmar brocades impressed Chinese visitors as soon as the teams set up their booths. “This is our first time to participate in the event. Myanmar brocades are different from Chinese ones. Many visitors prefer to buy our brocades because they like our patterns and colors,” a member of the Myitkyina team said.
According to the Yangon team, they brought brocades woven more than 100 years ago. They hope to share and exchange skills and experience with China’s Jingpo people.
Jingpo brocade is dominated with three colors, namely red, black and white. The black threads are often woven longitudinally, while red ones are used horizontally. The patterns are mainly about nature and life, and their number of types are more than 400.
