Achang people mainly reside in the Dehong Dai and Jingpo Prefecture of west Yunnan. The Alu Woluo Festival is their grandest annual event. "Woluo" literally means "celebrations around houses" in the Achang language.
The Alu Woluo Festival originated from hunting, farming and other labor activities of ancient Achang people. It is a time to commemorate the historic achievements of their ancestors and pray for a new life of happiness.
During the festival, they erect statues of dragons and elephants on a square, representing good luck. People of all ages come to the square, singing and dancing, and treat guests with delicacies.
