International students DIY black pottery in Diqing
During the Yunnan tour of "International Students Focus on China" , 21 international students visited Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest Yunnan province and experienced the unique culture of Tibetan people.
The students visited Tangdui Village in Nixi Township 30 kilometers away from the government seat of Diqing’s Shangri-la City. The village used to be a must-pass of the Ancient Tea-Horse Road and its black pottery-making has been listed as the national cultural heritage.
The Nixi pottery-making handcraft has a history of more than 2,000 years. It is made of the mixture of red and white earth which benefits users’ health. Through the process of shaping, carving and firing, the unique pottery products are formed in total darkness, smooth and fine. They are popularly used by local Tibetan people in their daily life.
During their visit to Tangdui, some of the international students tried their first product of black pottery and deliberately carved their names on them.
