Yunnan topography features high peaks and deep valleys, and the province’s first highway, a 45-kilometer infrastructure, took shape in 1996, linking Kunming to Songming.

With the deepening of reform and opening up, Yunnan built nine highways in late 1990s, including the Yuxi-Yuanjiang highway, the Anning-Chuxiong highway, the Chuxiong-Dali highway, the Dali-Baoshan highway and others. They added up to more than 1,100 kilometers.

During the 11th and 12th “Five-Year Plan” period, Yunnan Communications Investment and Construction Group built 23 highways, including the Simao-Xiaomengyang, Baoshan-Tengchong and Dali-Lijiang ones and totaling a mileage of 1,662 kilometers.

Another 10 highways with a total length of 680 kilometers were finished during the 13th “Five-Year Plan” period, involving the Wuding-Yimen highway, the Xiaomengyang-Mohan highway, and more.

Data at Yunnan Provincial Department of Transportation show the length of Yunnan highways reached 5,086 kilometers as of August 2018.

By 2020, the mileage will reach 10,000 kilometers.
