As of November 23, according to the monitoring data of Yunnan Dashanbao Black-necked Crane National Nature Reserve Administration, a record-high 1,623 black-necked cranes have come to winter in the nature reserve this year.

The black-necked cranes, as rare as giant pandas, are the only one of the world's 15 species of cranes that live in high altitudes throughout their lifetime. Most of them are distributed in China, where they are categorized as first-class protected wild animals.

In recent years, the nature reserve has introduced multiple measures to expand the area of wetlands, improve the ecosystems and raise people's awareness of protecting the black-necked cranes. This year, the migration peak period came about half a month earlier than past years, and the number of black-necked cranes increased by five or six hundred over the same period of previous year.

The migration peak period of black-necked cranes will continue until early December and their number will become stable by the end of December. Most of these black-necked cranes will winter here and leave next spring.
