An Asian elephant family gave birth to a new calf recently when they roamed in the wilderness of Pu’er City, southwest Yunnan Province, increasing their population from 10 to 11.
The newly-born baby elephant, hiding itself under the mother’s belly, was seen protected by a defensive formation by several other adult elephants in the family. The placenta was discovered in a coffee field by local elephant watchers.
Knowing the new birth, local forest authorities have increased their monitoring and protective efforts on the wild elephant herd. Villagers were warned of the danger of close-range watching driven by their curiosity.
