Located in northeast Yunnan on the Jinsha River, the Tiger-leaping Gorge is known for its beauty, ruggedness and grandness.

Hutiaoxia, or Tiger-leaping Gorge sits 96 kilometers away from Shangri-La, capital of northwest Yunnan’s Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.

It is bounded by Yulong Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain. The gorge extends 20 kilometers with a drop of 213 meters and includes 18 rapids.

The narrowest point of the river is only 30 meters wide. To the north of the gorge, there is a tiger-like peak, known to local people as the “Hu Tou Feng"(Tiger Head Peak).

The “tiger” is heading for the south in a jumping pose. And this is how the gorge got its name.
