Fuxian Lake carries Yunnan’s green dream
With crystal clear water, Fuxian Lake is one of the most famous lakes in China. Located in the area connecting Chenjiang, Jiangchuan and Huaning counties in central Yunnan, the lake is dubbed the gem embedded on Yunnan plateau for its blue and clear water.
As a half-closed lake, the Fuxian Lake receives water from its surrounding streams and rivers, underground springs and rainfalls. In the late 20th century, as the lake was gaining popularity amongtourists from home and abroad, hotels, restaurants and agritainments were densely built along the lake shore. As a result, a nightmare came when the environment condition of the Fuxian Lake deteriorated and blue-green algae thrived on the surface of the water.
There are no quick or easy remedies but to reduce the harmful sources step by step. Relocating households living in the protection area and returning farmlands to wetlands, the clean and blue Fuxian Lake is coming back after several years’ efforts.
With the implementation of strict regulations of pollution control, Fuxian Lake gradually returns to its original look and its underwater visibility is up to 10 meters.
