OCT gives impetus to development of all-for-one tourism in Yunnan

Lancang-Mekong Cooperation is a key platform for regional tourism cooperation. By promoting cultural tourism and strengthening tourism cooperation with the Mekong countries, Yunnan can better serve and integrate into the Belt and Road Initiative, said Wang Gang, Dean of OCT Tourism Institute.

The OCT Group is a large Chinese enterprise directly managed by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council. It has signed an agreement with Yunnan government, promising no less than 200 billion yuan investment in Yunnan during the 13th Five-Year Plan period.

“Medical tourism is simply a new tourism mode, where a tourist is coupled with medical services or travel to somewhere for recreational purposes,”said Chen Lijun, Vice President of Yunnan Provincial Academy of Social Sciences and China(Kunming) Research Center on South and Southeast Asia.

Although medical tourism originated in the developed Europe and America, it is now popular in some developing countries. And most Mekong countries should try to keep up with the trend to benefit.

Cultural tourism cooperation has always been a major part of cooperation among the Lancang-Mekong countries, and after 20 plus years of cultivation, cultural and tourist exchanges have gradually become daily routines among the six countries, said Meng Rui, Vice President of Yunnan Tourism Planning Institute, Yunnan Provincial Department of Tourism and Culture.

Yunnan has upgraded its tourism industry by merging with culture, sports and recreation. And in the future Yunnan will increase contacts with the Mekong cities to forge more sister-city partnerships.

Implementing measures involve joint project planning, jointly preparing tourist-city reports, promoting smart tourism and driving tours and more.

“Tourism is frequently mentioned in the Mekong cooperation mechanisms, which shows the importance of tourism,” said Nitivadee Manitkul, Royal Thai Consul General in Kunming.

Thailand has worked with China in building roads, railways and airports, and such cooperation are good for Thailand, China (Yunnan) and other Mekong countries in the region.

Nitivadee added it is impossible for an individual country to develop well its own tourism industry, and it is necessary for all parties to work together in tourism projects.

“Cambodia is rich in cultural resources, boasting world heritage Angkor Wat and beautiful natural scenery,” said Chhuon Dara, Secretary of State of Ministry of Commerce, Royal Government of Cambodia.

Noting Cambodia works hard on infrastructure and connectivity, Chhuon Dara said Cambodia supports construction of the Lancang-Mekong countries and promotes the Belt and Road Initiative for benefits of the people.

“Along with the‘Visit Laos Year 2018’, the Lao government has initiated a series of promotional activities for tourism development, like exhibitions, food festivals, cultural shows, artistic performances and celebrations during traditional festivals,” said Khamchan Vongsenboun, Vice Minister of Planning and Investment, Lao PDR.

Khamchan said Laos has 2,104 scenic areas in total and some have been recognized as a World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. In 2017, a total of 600,000 Chinese visited Laos, an increase of 20% year on year.

Praising the forum as significant, Khamchan said Laos will make full use of this platform to increase friendly people-to-people relations between Laos and China and other Mekong countries.

“Yunnan has many mechanisms for cooperation with the Mekong countries. For example, the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor and the China-Laos Cross-Border Economic Zone have provided Yunnan with sound mechanisms and opportunities for developing cultural tourism. However, the key is how to carry out them substantially.”

“We should make good use of the existing communication mechanisms, while creating new ones to deepen mutual understanding among peoples of the Lancang-Mekong countries,” said Dai Bin, President of China Tourism Academy.

Dai added that China, moving towards a strong tourist economy, is willing to share its experience in developing tourist destinations and encourage private capital to join in its tourism development.

Dai noted China would like to join hands with the five Mekong countries in pragmatically promoting the development of tourism resources that are needed by people in the region.

“The OCT Group and its branch companies attach great importance to this forum, and I hope this event will help the OCT capital in going global while inviting in the resources of theMekong countries,” said Liu Kaixin, Member of Standing Committee of CPC Overseas Chinese Town Committee; Secretary, CPC Overseas Chinese Town Commission for Discipline Inspection.

In April 2017, Yunnan Expo Tourism Group Holdings Ltd. and Yunnan Culture Industry Investment Group merged with the OCT. As a result, the three companies pillar the OCT’s business in Yunnan, underpinning the OCT’s restructuring and innovation.

The Lancang-Mekong Cooperation • Yunnan Cultural Tourism Development Forum was held Saturday morning at the Kunming-based Zhenzhuang Guest House.

As an activity of the 2018 Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Exposition, the forum is jointly hosted by OCT Yunnan Group, Yunnan Expo Tourism Group Holdings Ltd. and Yunnan Culture Industry Investment Holdings Co., Ltd ---  three pillar Yunnan branches of the Overseas Chinese Town. 

The tourism forum is supported by Yunnan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, Foreign Affairs Office of Yunnan Provincial People's Government, and Development Research Center of Yunnan Provincial People's Government.

The forum aims to encourage Yunnan and the South and Southeast Asian countries to exchange ideas and tourists, while sharing resources, information and market in culture and tourism development.
