Lao students compete for Chinese proficiency in Kunming
A Chinese speech contest for Lao Students specifically took place on May 25 in Kunming, Yunnan province as one event of the “2019 China-Laos Year of Tourism.”
The contest was jointly held by the Consulate General of Laos in Kunming, the Champa Magazine, and Yunnan Metropolitan Construction Investment Group. Lao contestants from eight universities in Kunming joined this competition.
After several rounds of competition, Tang Xionghua, Deng Tao and Wan Ta (Chinese names) at Yunnan Normal University, Kunming University of Science and Technology and Yunnan University, respectively, won the titles.
“The key to learning a language is to put it into practice, and this is an opportunity to test my Chinese,” said Tang. “I thought my Chinese is pretty good, but now I realize there are people speaking Chinese way better than me,” said Pu, another contestant.
“This contest aims at encouraging more Lao students to learn Chinese,” said Phouva Samounty, deputy consul-general of Laos in Kunming, adding his understanding to language and translation.
“The work of translation requires a wide range of knowledge, students thus ought to have chances to practice their Chinese, and today is a chance of such,” he concluded.
