The Puzhehei scenic area in southeast Yunnan’s Wenshan will be entitled as the national 5A top scenic area together with other 20 tourist destinations across China, according to a notice issued by the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism on December 15.
Puzhehei falls under the jurisdiction of Wenshan’s Qiubei county, and in the loclal Yi ethnic language, the word “Puzhehei” means a place abounding in fish and shrimps.
As a famed destination for sight-seeing, the area features clear lakes, winding streams, karst landforms, wet lands, good-shaped hills, lotus and birds.
Typical scenic sites in the area include the Swan and Dragon lakes, a ranch, and the Caihua (oil-seed rape flower) valley.
The valley is where some romantic scenes of “The Eternal Love” were filmed. It is a 2017 Chinese TV series once gained popularity among Vietnamese younsters.
Also, tourists can experience the distinct Yi folk custom during the merry-making Hualian festival in summer, when charcoal powder is smeared onto faces to have funny looks.
It is actually the Yi way to send guests their best wishes, and the face-smearing is usually coupled with group dance and folk melodies.
