A 29-year-old woman with the Delta variant of COVID-19 delivered triplets by Caesarean section under quarantine in west Yunnan’s Ruili City on August 11. Now the three babies and their mother are doing good.

Surnamed Zi, the woman is native to the neighboring Wanding city, and she was sent to the Ruili-based hospital of traditional Chinese and Dai medicines on July 9.

"On the basis of existing data, COVID-19 patients in third trimester of pregnancy would go through complications, especially the ones with Delta infection,” said Bai Song, deputy director of the Health Commission of Yunnan Province.

A 32-member medical team was set up the next day to carry out special care for the coming babies. The doctors and nurses worked around the clock to get prepared for premature delivery and other possibilities.

Zi’s condition of Covid infection worsened on July 12. “It was urgent for the mother and coming babies to have timely and effective treatment,” added Bai.

Thanks to joint efforts by local medics, the woman no longer showed signs of early birth or symptoms of serious fever in the ensuing weeks.

On Wednesday morning, however, serious cholestasis occurred to Ms. Zi and the special medical panel implemented the Caesarean section under Level III quarantine protection. Zi gave birth to three babies at around 10:00 am.

"Physical check-ups have been done for the three newborns, and the vital signs are stable at present," said Duan Jiang, chief physician of pediatrics of the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University, adding new feeding formulas will be designed soon for the babies.
