Dazu rock carvings on display in Beijing

These days, a special exhibition of the Dazu Rock Carvings is on display at National Museum in Beijing, with a total of 82 exhibits. Starting from September, the exhibition has lasted for around two months.The Dazu Rock Carvings is the general name for the grottoes and cliff carvings in Dazu district, southwest China’s Chongqing municipality. It represents the highest level of Chinese stone carvings from the 9th to the 13th century.

 

Although cave art was first introduced from ancient India, the Dazu Rock Carvings incorporated distinctive Chinese elements. It was inscribed on the World Heritage List by the UNESCO in 1999.
