Fish with piggy lips thrive in Luoping
The fish called Semilabeo obscurus mainly live in the Pearl River system. The reason why they are so special is that they have “piggy lips” and locals call them the “piggy-mouth fish”.
To protect the “Piggy mouth fish” and other aboriginal species, Liu Xing and his team started to domesticate aboriginal fish in the Lubuge Buyi Miao township of Luoping County, east Yunnan's Qujing City. Since 2011, they have done R&D on artificial breeding and made achievements to rise the number of aboriginal fish.
After almost 10 years’ efforts, breeding of aboriginal fish in the Pearl River system has shown initial success, conducive to the conservation biodiversity in the Pearl River system.
