In the Nanbanghe village in Liushun Town of Simao District, southwest Yunnan's Pu'er City, a special “elephant canteen” was built for local wild elephants for the village is frequented by the giants.
In 2018, the local forestry and grassland department planned a food-source base covering more than 4,000 Chinese mu (around 266 ha). There, plantain, corn, reed and others were planted so that the wild Asian elephants have enough to eat.
Currently, 1,200 mu (80 ha) has been planted. The "canteen" provides important supplies for Asian elephants during the food shortage season, effectively reducing the number of elephant visits to the village.
