Taikonaunt Ye Guangfu played a famous tune "phoenix-tail bamboo in the moonlight" in the Chinese space station on Feb 15, using typically Yunnan instrument of Hulusi, or the cucurbit flute.

Ye Guangfu had previously indicated that he would bring certain musical instrument to space. Now the answer is clear: it turned out to be the Hulusi flute of the Dai people in the province.

Born in Lianghe county, southwest Yunnan’s Dehong Dai and Jingpo autonomous prefecture, Hulusi is a 2,000-year-old musical instrument played by the Dai, Achang, Wa, De’ang, Bulang and other ethnic groups.

Phoenix Tail Bamboo under the Moonlight is a piece of Dai music composed by Chinese composer Shi Guangnan and lyricist Ni Weide in Dehong prefecture.

With its beautiful melodies, the song presents a scene of the lush bamboo grove in southern Yunnan, where Dai houses and pavilions are scattered.
