An American tourist named Mark received the first 6 day visa-free transit offered by Kunming on January 1, shortly after his MU734 flight from Hong Kong landed at Kunming Changshui International Airport in the evening.

Starting on January 1, 2019, foreigners from 53 countries worldwide are eligible for a 144-hour visa-free stay in the spring city of Kunming, capital of southwest China’s Yunnan Province. In response to the new service for international passengers, a special passage way for inspection has been designated at the Kunming airport, with new public signs and electric bulletin boards set up.

The new policy extended the former 72-hour visa-free period for foreigners to 144 hours but confines the passengers’ activities within the Kunming jurisdiction, where most visited tourist destinations include Dongchuan Red Land and the Stone Forest.
