Tea industry helps lift Bulang people out of poverty

Bulangshan Township is located in Menghai County of Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture in southwest China's Yunnan province. It is a famous Pu’er tea planting and producing area with 41,184 acres of tea trees.

In recent years, the tea industry is developing fast and playing more important roles in fighting against poverty.

The local government has vigorously supported the infrastructure constructions and development of tea and bee industries. By December 2018, the number of poor rural population in Bulangshan has dropped to 86 in 24 households, from 4387 in 1,013 households in 2013.

Menghai County, as a whole, has also identified the development of tea industry as the key to poverty alleviation and has made continuous efforts in improving tea quality, standardizing production and cultivating market.

According to statistics, there are more than 100 leading tea enterprises and cooperatives in the county supporting farmers in pairs. They have created more than 20,000 jobs and the monthly income of each poor family increases by 2,000 to 3,000 yuan.

Last September, Menghai as lifted out of poverty, according to an assessment released by the Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development, China’s State Council.
