The Hani is an ethnic group particular to Yunnan. Most of them live in the south Yunnan areas between the Yuanjiang-Honghe river and the Lancang river.

Making full use of eco-environment and natural laws, the Hani people have for generations built different terraces in accordance with the types of terrain and soil, forming a fine irrigation system on the Mt. Ailao slopes.

The Hani terraced fields are a benign agro-ecosystem that provides a basis for the Hani social and cultural systems. Where there are Hani settlements, there are terraces, the signature of this special ethnic group of Hani.
