Wa girls stick to traditional hair dance

The Wa ethnic girls in Ximeng county, southwest Yunnan’s Pu’er City, enjoy performing the traditional hair dance that was firstly a way to dry their hair after head washing. Long hair is taken as a special physical beauty in the eyes of Wa people.

As time went by, the hair-swinging dance had become part and parcel of the Wa social activities: hunting, farming, weaving, harvest, wedding, birth-giving and funerals.

In welcoming visitors from home and abroad, the Wa girls swing their hair warmly while singing and dancing, and they also offer wine or tea to the visitors after the hair dance.
