All rare species in Nujiang put under state protection
During the “13th Five-Year Plan” period (2016-2020), all of the rare species in northwest Yunnan’s Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture were put under the first or second level national protection, with the prefectural forest coverage exceeding 78 percent.
Nujiang prefecture is home to 24 plant species and 67 wild animals under the first or second level state protection in China. Other species of the prefecture also account for large proportion in Yunnan Province, including birds, beasts, vegetations and more.
The Gaoligong Mountain National Nature Reserve and the Yunling Provincial Nature Reserve in Nujiang cover 400,000 plus hectares, and the numbers of endangered snub-nosed monkey and antelope are on the rise in the area.
“Over the past five years, the Gaoligong nature reserve has invested more than 3.7 million yuan to improve biodiversity monitoring,” said a staff member with the Nujiang Eco-environment Bureau. “Trees are planted on 2,360 mu (157.3 hectares) of wild land to enlarge the habitats for rare monkeys and ants.”
