Handmade fishing net still popular in Jiangchuan

Though machine-weaving is something common in the industrialized world, the handmade fishing net still enjoys popularity in central Yunnan’s Jiangchuan County, where the flourishing Xingyun Lake has been the major source of thriving fishing in the area.

Here, Zhang Shunling is a best known net weaver, who was born in a traditional fishing family. “Fisher men from other places also come to buy my nets in varied sizes and types,” said Zhao with a 50-year weaving experience.

In his 60s, Zhang makes over 300 nets in a year and some are sold to coastal areas and overseas. Since 2006, Zhang has been honored as local inheritor of the fishing-net weaving skills, and he hopes more young people could join him in the meaning cause.
