Senior 3 students in Yangbi keep studying after earthquake
At 7:00 am in the morning, senior three student Cheng Yiting started to have classes in the blue tents at a quake-relief settlement site in Yangbi No.1 Senior High School. “This is very different classroom but the motive of study is still the same,” she said.
On May 23, 2021, earthquakes with a magnitude of 6.4 struck Yangbi Yi Autonomous County in the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.
On the first Monday after the earthquake, the senior three students started to have regular classes as scheduled. They are busy preparing with one goal——Gaokao, the National College Entrance Examination in China.
The classroom was set in the tents. Although they still had some lingering fear of the earthquake, “nothing is more important compared to Gaokao,” she said.
Talking about the scene of earthquake that night, the whole process was vividly in her mind. “The teaching building was shaking from side to side. Everyone was holding together. Teachers asked us not to fear, but I was really frightened at that moment,” said Cheng Yiting,“Luckily, we were evacuated on the playground and no one got hurt.”
After the earthquake, the teaching building was identified as the dilapidated building, which could not be used for now. Senior one and two students were waiting for the notice to go back to class.
Thanks to the local government’s timely efforts, 12,433 students of primary school and middle school and 2813 children of kindergarten have been allocated to safe region for emergency relief. None of them got hurt.
