Thermal imaging used to monitor elephants at night

Yunnan forest authorities and fire fighters have employed the thermal-imaging technique in monitoring the elephants at night via drones, according to a Xinhua report.

The thermal-imaging technique is said to have been used in central Yunnan’s Eshan County on May 27, when the falling darkness made it hard to monitor the elephant wanderers at night. Via temperature ajustments, the lost herd was found within 30 minutes.  

During the 41-day wandering in Eshan and other counties in Yuxi City, the northbound elephant herd traveled through 9 towns and townships, damaging economic crops and other properties of 400 plus rural households.
