The Tetracentron trees have been found growing for more than 60 million years in the Mt. Ailao forests in southwest Yunnan’s Pu’er city.
Mt. Ailao is a world-class hotspot in biological diversity, and the Ailao section in Jingdong county alone houses 2,242 plant species.
Tetracentron is likened as a living plant fossil left over from the Tertiary Period.
The rare plant belongs to an angiosperm under the second-class state protection in China.
It is of great value for studying the origin of angiosperms and the evolution of ancient Chinese flora.
