COP15: Toucans seen in tropical forest of Dehong
The rare animal, toucans, were seen in the tropical forest in Yingjiang County, southwest Yunnan’s Dehong Dai & Jingbo Autonomous Prefecture on July 29. Hailed as the living museum of birds, the Toucan Valley, is home to toucans, the level 1 protected rare animal.
Toucans are tropical forest birds known for their large and strikingly colored bills. The bill is also believed to have a frightening effect on other birds, including hawks. The wings of toucans are short and rounded, and the tail is usually long.
The valley covers a total area of 3306 ha. It has typical vegetation of rain forest, monsoon forest, evergreen broad-leaved forest and deciduous broad-leaved forest. It ranges from 240 m to 1700 m above sea level. In addition to toucans, other rare birds can also be seen here. There are more than 700 species of birds recorded, accounting for 51% of the total in China.
