Zoologists at the Kunming Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, recently captured images of the white-cheeked macaque in the Gaoligong Mountains in northwest Yunnan’s Fugong County, increasing the number of primate species in the area to 10.
Yunnan is a province of bio-diversity, and the fifteenth session of the Conference of the Parties, the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15), will be held in Kunming in the coming October.
The species was first described Chinese primatologists Cheng Li, Chao Zhao and Peng Feifan, in the American Journal of Primatology in 2015. It is one of twenty-three extant species in the genus Macaca.
