Watch out! Indian bison hangs out in Lancang
An Indian bison was spotted and filmed Feb 10 by a villager in Lancang Lahu autonomous county, southwest Yunnan’s Pu’er city. As is shown in the video, the huge gaur stared at the car for a few seconds before jumping into the bush and disappeared.
According to an expert with the Lancang Forestry and Grassland Bureau, it was an adult Indian bison in good health, weighing about one tonnage. The expert warned that Indian bisons are fierce by nature. So be careful when meeting them in the wild.
The bison species features a high convex ridge on the forehead between its forward- bending horns. It is the tallest wild cattle native to south and southeast Asia. In China, it can be only seen in south Yunnan province.
The animal has been listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 1986 and under the first-class state protection in China.
