Water sprinkling to be held online in Xishuangbanna - Where to

Given the on-going Covid outbreaks, the Water-Sprinkling Festival will be held online again in Xishuangbanna, a trend that has persisted for three years in a row in the Dai autonomous prefecture of south Yunnan province.

As a traditional festival of the Dai ethnic group, the water festival is also celebrated in the neighboring countries of Thailand, Lao, Burma, Cambodia and more. During the festival, Dai folks used to have a water-fetching ceremony and sprinkle water to each other for blessing.

For Covid prevention and residents’ safety, however, local authorities in Xishuangbanna said physical activities are not allowed this year. People can only mark the festival on the internet.
