About 300 green peafowls live in the Ailao Mountains in central Yunnan’s Chuxiong Yi autonomous prefecture, making up half of the rare bird in China.
With a population of 555 to 600, the green peafowl is the native to China, Yunnan province in particular. It is under the national first-class protection and has been listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List.
Chuxiong attached great importance to the protection of green peafowls in recent years. In 2003, Konglonghe nature reserve was set up in the prefecture’s Shuangbai county for protection of green peafowls.
