Cangyuan county features green hills, Wa culture

Located in southwest Yunnan’s Lincang City, Cangyuan covers 2,446.43 square kilometers, making home to 20 plus ethnic groups.

As a well-known cradle of the Wa ethnic group worldwide, Cangyuan county houses 40 percent of the Wa population in China, and it is the largest Wa settlement nationwide.

Bordering Myanmar on the south and west, the county makes a gateway for Yunnan to connect with south and southeast Asia.

The beautiful landscape in Cangyuan features green hills, lucid waters and lush bamboos.

Cangyuan also abounds extending mountains and ridges, with a 74.49-percent forest coverage in its jurisdiction.

Rich in vegetation and dotted by 66 lakes, the county has 84 rivers that meet each other among the criss-cross mountains.

All year round, the climate in Cangyuan is mild, no extreme heat in summer or severe cold in winter.

The Nangunhe national nature reserve in Cangyuan is home to 100 plus rare species under state protection, including Asian elephant, leopard, white-handed gibbon, wild hog deer, and caryota urens.

Canyang was removed from the improverished list on April 30, 2019.

Now the newly-built Wa villages are equipped with widened roads, running water and internet access, with medical care and schooling services readily available.

The families have earned incomes by thriving industries and vocational skills, and more and more children of the villagers were admitted by colleges and universities.
