Reading tip: Yunnan is a popular tourist destination, and tourism forms a pillar industry for the province. While increasing local income, tourism also boosts people-to-people friendship. At the backdrop of the on-going Yunnan Lianghui/Two Sessions, we have a special review of the changes happened in the past five years. Our third story today is about tourist experiences in Yunnan:

Tourism clean-up

On April 29, 2017, @ Miss LittleLove from northeast China’s Liaoning Province took her daughter to Lijiang in west Yunnan.

They reached the Old Town, lingered on the Square Street (sifangjie in Chinese) and tasted local snacks that day. In the evening, she posted her Lijiang experience on Weibo, a popular Chinese social media.

“I feel lucky to see the best of Yunnan as authorities are trying to clean local tourist market. No forced shopping, and sound meals were offered, together with clean guest rooms. No overly cheap tours, and Lijiang is less touristy now. Just perfect ~”

Miss Little’s experience in Lijiang is not an individual case, more and more tourists are enjoying the same.

On March 27, 2017, Yunnan province introduced 22 strictest-ever measures to clean up the local tourism industry.

The measures, which will came into effect on April 15, include forbidding forced shopping and overly cheap tours, punishing fraud targeted at tourists, and more.

Within a month, most venues for forced shopping were closed and overly cheap tours decreased in bulk. Although the tourists influx turned down, the service and tourists' experience improved.

Toilet revolution

Besides sound food and rooms, Yunnan also saw improved toilets in scenic areas, which are also a daily necessity for tourists.

In November 2017, a Tianjin tourist dubbed NoMore 1688 visited Lijiang and wrote on Weibo.

“What impressed me most in Lijiang is the public toilets that are near, clean, and of soft tissue. I also like the blue sky and dreamy clouds.”

In 2017, China National Tourism Administration issued a list of the cities that stood out in the Toilet revolution. And quite a few Yunnan cities were among the list, including Kunming, Dali, Qujing, Honghe and Baoshan.

Now well-equipped public toilets are quite visible cross Yunnan Province, be it in the scenic areas, cities or rural areas.

Here are some of the newly-built toilets in scenic areas.
